Urinary excretion of uric acid and pyrazinamide in dogs

Abstract
In view of reports on hyperuricemic action of pyrazinamide, the iterrelationship. between excretions of uric acid and pyrazinamide was investigated ¢¥in this study.
Neither pyrazinamide exerted influence upon the excretion of uric acid, nor uric acid modified the excretion of pyrazinamide, suggesting different transport mechanisms of these substances in the tubules. - Probenecid increased the clearance of uric acid above that of creatinine, and decreased C_(PAH) near to C while. C_(PZA) remained uninfluenced.
2,4-Dinitrophenol, an uncoupling agent of oxidative phosphorylation, affected the secretion of PAH, whereas both uric acid and pyrazinamide excretions were not modified by it. Urea diuresis incresed C_(PZA) in proportion to the increment of urine volume.. Data from all experiments exhibited a -highly. significant correlation. between CPZA and urine flow rate.
These observations provide further evidences that pyrazinamide is passively reabsorbed in the renal tubules by simple diffusion, entirely different from that of uric acid which is known to be transported bidirectionally by active mechanisms.
